Dr. Ian Nelson is back home again in Indiana, and he knows what a pain orthopedic surgery can be, because he’s had five procedures himself. The Elkhart native played football, basketball, and baseball at Concord High School before becoming a three-year starting quarterback for Butler University’s Bulldogs. His own experience as an injured athlete gives him a sports-minded perspective on patient care.
After studying in Madison, Wis., and sunny Southern California he returned to Indiana and now huddles up with his sports medicine team to get patients back to their fullest potential. That might be playing high-level sports, doing recreational exercise, playing with their family or just living without pain. Dr. Nelson takes pride in the time and quality of his patient interactions to ensure that all questions are answered and their goals are at the center of treatment decisions. He reviews all surgical and non-surgical options so patients can make a well-informed decision about their care.
Dr. Nelson shares his love of sports with his daughters and coaches them in softball, basketball, and soccer. He participates in all kinds of competitive sports and hosts an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament at his home. Dr. Nelson devotes time serving on hospital committees and boards in addition to teaching students in his clinic and in the O.R.
